About Length Converter

Whether you are reading a tailor's measurement in inches, a room size in feet, a running distance in kilometres or a road sign in miles, this length converter turns one unit into another in a single step. It supports eight common units: metres, kilometres, centimetres, millimetres, inches, feet, yards and statute miles. Choose the units, enter the value and get the converted figure, rounded to up to 4 decimal places and followed by the unit name.

Conversions use exact international definitions: one inch is 2.54 cm, one foot is 0.3048 m, one yard is 0.9144 m and one mile is 1,609.344 m. That keeps results consistent with school textbooks, engineering drawings and product specifications. The tool converts one value at a time, accepts decimals, and rejects negative numbers because a length cannot be below zero.

Features

  • Eight units from millimetres to statute miles
  • Exact factors: 1 in = 2.54 cm, 1 ft = 0.3048 m
  • Converts in either direction between any two units
  • Results to up to 4 decimals, with Indian digit grouping and the unit name
  • Clear error for negative or non-numeric values

Why use it

  • Convert height, room sizes and distances quickly
  • Handle imperial measurements on imported products
  • Consistent with standard textbook definitions
  • No app to install, and it runs on your device

Formula used

Converted value = input × source base-unit factor / destination base-unit factor.

Examples

Height in feet to centimetres

Input: Value: 5.5, From unit: International feet, To unit: Centimetres

Result: 167.64 Centimetres

One foot is exactly 30.48 cm.

Metre to feet

Input: Value: 1, From unit: Metres, To unit: International feet

Result: 3.2808 International feet

One metre is just under 3.281 feet.

Running distance to miles

Input: Value: 10, From unit: Kilometres, To unit: Statute miles

Result: 6.2137 Statute miles

A 10 km run is about 6.21 miles.

Length Converter: frequently asked questions

How do I convert a height like 5 feet 7 inches?

The tool takes one value in one unit, so convert the parts separately or combine them first. Seven inches is 7 divided by 12, about 0.583 feet, so enter 5.583 in feet. Alternatively convert 5 feet and 7 inches to centimetres separately and add them: 152.4 plus 17.78 gives 170.18 cm.

Are these international feet or US survey feet?

International feet, exactly 0.3048 metres. The older US survey foot was slightly longer and is used mainly in historical American land surveys. For everyday use in India and most of the world, including construction and property measurements, the international foot is the right choice.

How many decimal places does the result show?

Results are rounded to up to 4 decimal places and followed by the unit name, so 1 metre shows as 3.2808 International feet. Exact conversions display without extra decimals, such as 5.5 feet as 167.64 Centimetres. Large results use Indian digit grouping, for example 1,00,000 Centimetres for 1 kilometre.

Is the mile a nautical mile?

No. The tool uses the statute mile of 1,609.344 metres, the mile found on road signs in the UK and USA and in most running and fitness apps. A nautical mile, 1,852 metres, is used at sea and in aviation and is not offered here.

Can I convert area or volume here?

No, this tool handles length only. For land measurements such as square feet, acres or gunthas, use the Land Area Converter. Length units cannot be swapped for area units, because squaring changes the conversion factor, so converting feet to metres does not give you square feet to square metres.
